Parental Mistake # 1036

Culprit: Me

Scenario: Matthew has been fed, washed and is now ready for bed. He spies the bag of Dove chocolate and says in his cutest two-year old voice, “Choc-at.”

Mistake: Giving Matthew said piece of “choc-at.”

Reason: Matthew has perfected the art of stalling — the technique children are blessed with almost from the moment of conception. Matthew has learned that a piece of Dove chocolate, combined with his astonishingly advanced will power, will melt incredibly slowly. He realizes that his mother will not put him to bed with a mouth full of chocolate, so he neither chews nor swallows the liquidy concoction. This technique buys him at least 10 extra minutes. It also causes chocolate drool to drip down his chin, threatening to test the stain-proofness of the carpet and furnishings.

Lesson learned: No Dove chocolate before bed. (Wasn’t this a lesson I should have learned by now?)

  1. Cullen knows this amazing trick, also. It works with milk. You drink it very slow and do not swallow.
